CHAPTER 8

Mimbres Journey Begins to Unfold

As the flight gained altitude, I was able to plug into the internet and start a quick research into Mimbres. I had no idea who the people were, are or anything about places or history. Wikpedia gave an overview that said, “Mimbres may, depending on its context, refer to a tradition within a subregion of the Mogollon culture area (the Mimbres branch or the Mimbres Mogollon) or to an interval of time, the “Classic Mimbres phase” (also known as the “Mimbres culture”; 1000–1130 CE, roughly) within the Mimbres branch.

The Mimbres branch is a subset of the larger Mogollon culture area, centered in the Mimbres Valley and encompassing the upper Gila River and parts of the upper San Francisco River in southwestern New Mexico and southeastern Arizona as well as the Rio Grande Valley and its western tributaries in southwest New Mexico. Differentiation between the Mimbres branch and other areas of the Mogollon culture area is most apparent during the Three Circle (825–1000 CE roughly) and Classic Mimbres (1000–1150) phases, when architectural construction and black and white painted pottery assume locally distinctive forms and styles. Classic Mimbres phase pottery is particularly famous pottery.” I also found out that Mimbres meant willows and the Mogollon name came from some Spaniard during the time they were colonizing the area.

I read that Mimbres people were scattered through a lot of southern New Mexico and into the heart of Mexico. They were amazing and prolific artists as countless finds of their pottery indicated. Round homes have been discovered and later it seems as if they moved into homes with more square corners. There are also indications that they lived in cave dwellings. What came to mind was that they lived in an area where a lot of uranium has been mined in recent history. I let go of the thought as I kept finding very interesting images on their pottery.

I still did not have much to go on. I wondered if Mimbres people were still living somewhere. Archeologists believe that they may be living in present day Pueblo people, but that is not certain. I also had seen a lot of pictures of their pottery and the images were of amazing archetypal content. Language came to mind and how the Mimbres people saw reality as that reality is directly impacted by language. I thought about the parchment that was in my possession and the thought led me to believe that they had written language.

As the plane started its landing approach I looked out through the window. I could see such beauty in the land. There seemed to be an agricultural abundance. The greenery along with the rows of obvious farming and watering of the land gave me a feeling that good things are possible in the plant world. As soon as the thought of ‘plant world’ went through my mind I realized that I really didn’t know what that phrase really means. I had heard it a few times recently,
